Yi Jianlian didn't make it easy for the city of Milwaukee to immediately embrace him. More performances like his last one should help him start winning Bucks fans over.

Yi looks to follow up a strong effort in the Bucks' home opener when Milwaukee hosts Toronto on Tuesday night.

The Bucks (1-2) chose the 6-foot-11 Chinese forward with the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, but Yi expressed reservations about playing for the team and didn't sign until Aug. 29. Even after earning a starting spot, he struggled in his first two games, with the Bucks losing both.

A 16-point, eight-rebound performance in Milwaukee's 78-72 victory over Chicago on Saturday, however, should help him start to gain the support of the home crowd. Yi gets his next chance to impress the fans when Toronto (2-1) visits the Bradley Center.

"There's been an awful lot of focus on this young man, and the whole process is a marathon," Bucks coach Larry Krystkowiak said Saturday. "This is big for his confidence. ... It's only one game, but I'm really proud of him."

Yi's breakout game came after a dismal performance against Charlotte the night before, when foul trouble landed him on the bench and he finished with two points on 1-of-6 shooting in 15 minutes. The Bucks lost 102-99, and Yi fouled out with nine points in his NBA debut against Orlando on Wednesday, with Milwaukee falling 102-83.

Things were different against the Bulls. Yi was 6-of-15 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line, and grabbed four of his eight rebounds on the offensive end. He also chipped in two blocks and two steals.

"He took the challenge and made some huge shots and became a playmaker," said Bucks guard Michael Redd, who scored a game-high 27 points. "I'm proud of his development. He's growing."

Following this contest, the Bucks travel to Houston on Friday for a much-anticipated battle with Yi's countryman Yao Ming and the Rockets.

Despite Yi's progress, Redd is still the key to a struggling Bucks offense that managed only 32 points in the first half against Chicago. The Bucks are tied with the Bulls for the second-worst offense in the league at 86.7 points per game.

Redd hasn't performed well in 20 career games against Toronto, posting his second-lowest average (17.0 ppg) against any team.

Making matters worse, this Raptors club could be the best one Redd has faced. Toronto is second in the league with 88.0 points allowed per contest and has its own emerging big man in second-year 7-footer Andrea Bargnani, who's averaging 16.7 points.

Bargnani is one of three young Raptors averaging 16 points or more, joining 6-foot-10 forward Chris Bosh (16.7), who's bounced back from a preseason knee injury, and point guard T.J. Ford (18.0).

Ford, who played his first two seasons with the Bucks before being dealt to the Raptors in June 2006, is the oldest of the three at 24.

Toronto won the Atlantic Division last season, and after falling in the first round of the playoffs to New Jersey, exacted revenge Friday with a 106-69 rout of the Nets.

Coach Sam Mitchell's team is starting a stretch of four games in five days - three on the road - and will be looking to bounce back from its first loss, 98-95 in overtime to revamped Boston on Sunday.

Ford scored 32 points against the Celtics, but Bosh and Bargnani went a combined 0-of-12 from the field in the first half.

"I knew tonight was going to be a night where I had to put up a lot of shots because they weren't leaving our shooters," said Ford, who had 12 assists in the season opener against Philadelphia.

Ford averaged 14.3 points and 9.8 assists in four games against the Bucks last season as Toronto went 3-1 versus Milwaukee.

The Chicago Bulls have gotten off to slow starts each of the last three seasons and still made the playoffs, so there isn't a major concern yet. However, for a team that has championship aspirations, they would probably like to get their first win of the 2007-08 season in the books as soon as possible.

The struggling Bulls (0-2) look to get on track Saturday when they visit the stumbling Milwaukee Bucks, who are trying to avoid their worst start in 31 years.

Chicago is considered one of the favorites to contend for the Eastern Conference crown after returning the core group of players that lost to Detroit in the second round of the playoffs last season.

The Bulls haven't looked too sharp, though, as they lost to Philadelphia 96-85 in Friday's home opener after falling to New Jersey 112-103 in overtime on Wednesday. Chicago made just 33-of-86 shots against the 76ers and is shooting 39 percent from the floor this season.

"We're not playing the Chicago Bulls' way," said Andres Nocioni, who scored 15 points on Friday. "I don't know why. We practice really, really well. I think it's probably with the mind. We need to focus and try to play the way we play every year."

Though the Bulls have made the playoffs each of the past three seasons, they've gotten off to some dismal starts. Last season, they won just three of their first 12 games, and in 2005-06 they won three of their first eight. In 2004-05, Chicago matched the 1967-68 franchise record with nine straight losses before rallying to reach the postseason.

The Bulls try to get their first win against the Bucks, against whom they went 4-0 last season to sweep the season series for the first time since 1997-98.

Ben Gordon scored a career-high 48 points in the Bulls' 126-121 overtime win at the Bradley Center on March 4, and averaged 30.8 points in four games against Milwaukee last season, his highest against any East opponent.

Gordon led Chicago with 25 points on Friday after scoring a team-high 27 points in the season opener.

Luol Deng had only 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting against the 76ers, but averaged 23.0 on 19-of-31 shooting in two games last season in Milwaukee.

The Bucks (0-2) hope to get things turned around at the Bradley Center, where they've won their last four home openers.

Milwaukee lost to Charlotte 102-99 on Friday after dropping Wednesday's season opener to Orlando 102-83. The Bucks have also opened 0-2 in 2002-03 and in 2000-01, but have not started a season with three straight losses since dropping a franchise record five in a row in 1976-77.

"We are playing really hard this year," said Michael Redd, who scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half on Friday. "We are trying to take pride in our defense this year. Last year, we really struggled defensively."

Redd scored 52 points in the loss to the Bulls in March, and his 38.0 points per game against Chicago last season was his highest against any opponent in 2006-07.

Yi Jianlian, the No. 6 pick in the draft, was held to two points and four rebounds and didn't play in the fourth quarter against the Bobcats because of foul trouble. Yi fouled out in his debut Wednesday after getting nine points and three rebounds in 25 minutes.

Quote:National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern is delighted with the buzz that Yi Jianlian is creating in his homeland.
.
Milwaukee Bucks teammate Andrew Bogut is more concerned with helping the Chinese teenager settle into his new home.
.
Bogut, an Australian who was the top overall selection in the 2005 draft, knows what it's like to play in the NBA as a foreigner carrying the expectations of a nation.
.
"I'm not a veteran by any means, but I've been here long enough to know that you've got to be different as an international player," said Bogut, who played two years of US college basketball before becoming the first Australian selected No. 1 overall.
.
"I think international players take it a bit harder when they get to the league. You've just got to figure out you've got 82 games, forget about the last game and look to the next game. I think he will be all right once he meets some people."
.
Melbourne's Bogut said he thought the Bucks made a savvy decision in selecting Yi sixth overall in June.
.
"I think he has a chance to be very, very good," Bogut said. "I've played against him a couple of times and he's just very quick and mobile for a big guy. It's going to take time to adjust. I think it was a great pick."
.
Some in Yi's camp were unhappy at the prospect of having him play in Milwaukee. They worried that he wouldn't see enough playing time, and also cited the Wisconsin city's lack of a large Asian community.
.
The 7-foot (2.13m) 19-year-old star for China's Guangdong Tigers finally signed a multi-year contract on August 29, which will pay him 2.3 million dollars in his debut season according to rookie salary regulations.
.
Bogut said he believes Yi will come to like Milwaukee, as he has.
.
"I have a house, nice property," Bogut said. "I can actually go outside and have a coffee for once, instead of sitting on a balcony 26 floors up (in the city). I'm really happy in Milwaukee. The winters are cold but it's really peaceful and I like it."
.
Yi seemed pleased upon his arrival earlier this month.
.
"It's a beautiful city . . . nice downtown," he said. "You've got lake. You've got river. It seems comfortable here."
.
The Bucks, and Bucks-watchers seemed pleased as Yi began practicing with his new team, with local basketball writers using phrases such as "silky" and "gazelle-like" to describe the new recruit's graceful athleticism.
.
While his teammates are welcoming, they indicated during training camp that a culture gap wouldn't make Yi immune to the usual rookie initiation rites.
.
"I think that's the one part he'll have to get adjusted to," forward Desmond Mason said, flashing a devious smile. "Carrying other people's bags and shoes and getting doughnuts.
.
"We might have him sing a little bit. You do rookies like that because you had to do it as a rookie but at the end of the day, you look out for him, too."
.
While the Bucks and their Milwaukee fans were getting excited about Yi's arrival, Stern was looking with an approving eye on the excitement he was generating back home in China.
.
He said CCTV-5, the Chinese sports network, was already anticipating coverage of Yi and the Bucks' home game against compatriot Yao Ming's Houston on February 2, coinciding with Chinese New Year celebrations.
.
"From the NBA's perspective, having another bona fide Chinese superstar in waiting - he's coming here with less exposure and less experience than Yao, but there are very high hopes for him in his homeland," Stern said.
.
Stern also said that while Milwaukee didn't perhaps seem the most natural fit for an Asian import - with a bigger city likely offering a bigger Asian fan base - he thought the match was intriguing.
.
"I think that Milwaukee is going to be on the map as far as Chinese awareness, Chinese businesses," he said. "Sort of interesting things have a way of happening because of the connectivity of a country as large as China and a city like Milwaukee." — AFP

Quote:What Will It Take To Make Kobe Bryant A Bull?
CHICAGO (CBS) ―

Kobe Bryant remains a Laker -- for now, but don't be surprised if he becomes a Chicago Bull in the near future.

Bryant hasn't made it a secret that he wants out of L.A., going as far as calling out the team's ownership this summer and asking to be traded. Lakers owner Jerry Buss recently said he would listen to offers for the superstar, and Lakers coach Phil Jackson confirmed this week there have been talks between the Bulls and L.A.

Why the Bulls? Well, Kobe has a no trade clause, and the Bulls are one of a few teams he would agree to be traded to. Right now, the other two teams on Kobe's list reportedly include the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks.

Both of them play in the Western Conference, and it's hard to imagine Lakers management making a trade to another team in their own conference. That would allow Kobe to haunt them over and over, so it would make sense to trade him to the East. Plus, the Bulls have enough young talent that would interest the Lakers.

The stumbling block remains the number of quality players the Bulls would have to give up. The Lakers obviously want to raid the best of the Bulls talent. The names most prominently thrown out in the trade rumors include Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon, among others.

It's hard to imagine Bulls General Manager John Paxson parting with Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich. They are the cornerstones of this team and are deeply respected for their work ethic and skills. In fact, Deng is expected to sign a contract extension tomorrow.

However, talented Ben Gordon could be shipped, along with rookie Joakim Noah, forward Tyrus Thomas (who the Bulls are not happy with anyway, but has loads of talent), and a few others.

The Bulls can't dismantle this team because it would defeat the purpose of bringing Kobe in in the first place – to win a championship.

Not to mention, Kobe would veto a trade if he believed the Bulls were getting rid of too much of their talent. And, if this isn't complicated enough, money/current contracts is huge factor. The Bulls and Lakers will have salary caps issues to deal with to make any trade work.

Right now, the ball is in the Bulls court. The Kobe mess is a distraction for all involved in L.A. and the NBA. It appears they're better off moving him out of town rather than dealing with the rumors and a disgruntled superstar all season long.

If he has to leave Los Angeles, you have got to believe the NBA would be thrilled for him to end up in Chicago. It's not like the MJ comparisons haven't already followed Kobe his entire career. John Paxson would love to have Kobe – what NBA general manager wouldn't? Bryant has plenty of good years left in him and thrives in the NBA Championship spotlight.

However, Paxson won't be forced into making a deal that he's not comfortable with, so stay tuned as this story continues to play out ... it should be interesting!

Well Kobe did model his game after Jordan...could he be the next Jordan in Chicago??? To be honest if the Bulls have to give up Thomas, Deng, Gorden for Kobe, the lakers will be the benefiters of this trade. If Chicago can keep Hinrich and Deng/Gorden, then they got themselves a very decent team. What do you guys feel about the trade proposal? Is it going to happen?

I personally feel that a trade will eventially happen...probably will not be the bulls...as mentioned in the article, the players involved are Franchise players for Chicago

I can throw myself in the group most excited to see how this kid shakes up. A rookie making his USA/NBA league debut with a ton of potential.

Howard is always a player to watch, but how will Rashard Lewis shape up under his new team.
Hopefully we can get a decent amount of people to show up for the game.

I know that it is only the preseason and no body can predict what will happen. But I was just having a discussion with a friend of mine regarding who the rookie of the year will be this season. With Oden out for the season, it seems that the easy choice would be Durant. Sonics are full of scrubs and Durant will have the green light to throw up as many shots as he like, so states wise he may be the most likily choice. But based on the NBA rankings, he is only third. Being a bucks fan, I would love for Yi to win it but I personally very doubt it as I think like Yao, he will need a full season to get accustomed to the league and the team. Who do you guys think will be the Rookie of the year and why?

I saw that lame poetry segment of the game on sportscenter. Anyways, they looked fairly good when it came to team work, from the clips anyways. Anyone think the big 3 will live up the hype and bring the celtics to the playoffs, or even the championship?

I on the other hand see them starting out good, play good as a team with little controversy. After a month or so I expect some type of frustration to ensue.
