Rondo's triple-double propels Celtics over…

CBSSports.com wire reports

BOSTON — For the second time in two nights, the Boston Celtics played a team trying to knock them out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference.

Both times, the aging former champions held onto their playoff position.

“I’m just glad we’re back to .500,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Wednesday after Boston beat the Milwaukee Bucks 102-96 for its second straight win since entering the All-Star break on a five-game losing streak.

Rajon Rondo had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to record his third triple-double of the season, and Kevin Garnett scored 25 points with 10 rebounds. The victory over the ninth-place Bucks left the Celtics tied with the New York Knicks for the last two playoff spots in the East.

It’s a bit of a comedown for the franchise that won its NBA-record 17th title in 2008 and returned to the finals two years later. But in this lockout-shortened season, Boston’s best chance may be to eke into the playoffs well-rested and hope for an upset once it gets there.

“Hopefully we can get a good rhythm going here,” Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. “And just kind of catch our stride in the second half of the season.”

Ersan Ilyasova had 25 points with 10 rebounds and Drew Gooden scored 23 for the Bucks, who are percentage points ahead of the Cavaliers in ninth place. Brandon Jennings had just six points on 2-for-11 shooting to go with his eight assists.

“It’s another game where one of the better point guards has gotten the better of us,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. “That’s happened often this year and that’s not all on Brandon. It’s on our defense and it’s on the guy that’s guarding him.”

Jennings made back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 91 seconds to cut Boston’s lead to 98-93 with 1:19 left. Milwaukee got within two points on Ilyasova’s put-back layup, but Garnett sank four free throws in the final 15 seconds to clinch it.

The Bucks travel to Atlanta and Orlando on Friday and Saturday.

“We have to get it done,” Gooden said. “You know, it’s funny. We never get blown out. We fight to the end, and it just kind of [upsets] us that we come up short every time, almost.”

Rondo had six rebounds and five assists in the third quarter, when the Celtics went on a 20-4 run to turn a five-point deficit into a double-digit lead. Boston led by 17 in the fourth quarter and had a 98-83 edge with 3 minutes left when the Bucks scored 10 straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers by Jennings 12 seconds apart.

Skiles said Jennings seemed as though he didn’t want to take shots.

“That’s part of the growing process for me,” Jennings said. “Right now my teammates are making shots. … I just felt like I didn’t have to do so much because my teammates were making so many shots.”

Ilyasova hit a putback that cut it to 98-96 before Garnett sank a pair of free throws with 14.4 seconds left. The Celtics gave Jennings a layup but he missed it, and he also missed a 3-point attempt before Garnett grabbed the rebound and went back to the foul line for two more free throws.

Chris Wilcox came off the bench to grab 13 rebounds in 26 minutes for Boston.

Brandon Bass, making his second consecutive start because of Jermaine O’Neal’s wrist injury, scored 16 points with seven rebounds for Boston. Milwaukee led 60-55 with 8:34 left in the third quarter when the Celtics scored the next 12 points and 20 out of 24 to open an 11-point lead.

Both teams were playing for the second consecutive night following the All-Star break.

Boston beat Cleveland, then the ninth-place team in the East, on Tuesday to hold onto eighth place in the East. The Bucks were coming off a 119-118 victory over the Washington Wizards earned when Ilyasova tipped in Jennings’ miss with 2.2 seconds left.

Ilyasova had 10 points in the first quarter and Rondo had eight, when the teams finished tied 25-all. The Bucks took the lead with Larry Sanders’ tip-in on the first possession of the second quarter and led for the rest of the half, but Boston cut a nine-point deficit to four just before the break when Rondo drove for a layup and then Ray Allen stole the ensuing inbounds pass to set up Keyon Dooling’s 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds left.

Notes

  • Garnett and Sanders exchanged words, drawing a double technical foul with 6:23 left in the second quarter.
  • Gooden had 16 points and six assists and Jennings had seven assists at halftime.
  • O’Neal missed his third straight game with a sprained left wrist.
  • Mike Dunleavy picked up a technical foul complaining after he was beaten for a rebound by Rondo down the stretch.
  • It was Rondo’s 16th career triple-double, and his 10th in the regular season.

Celtics potential trade targets

The NBA’s March 15 trade deadline is on the horizon, and the Celtics need a big man. (They also need to get younger, faster, and find more scoring, but big man is a good place to start). Although the pickings are slim, some names have been bandied about, from wish-list dreams to those a little more grounded in reality. Here’s a review of the possibilities.

NBA: Jennings, Bucks keep Wizards winless, 102-81

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brandon Jennings scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 102-81 victory over the winless Washington Wizards on Friday night.

Ersan Ilyasova had 16 points, and Carlos Delfino, who missed the first two games of the season with a sprained right wrist, added 15 off the bench for Milwaukee (2-1). Andrew Bogut had 13 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks.

Jordan Crawford, benched in favor of Nick Young after scoring one point in a loss at Atlanta on Wednesday, led Washington (0-3) with 24 points. John Wall had six points on 1-of-9 shooting and four turnovers.

Washington also was called for a technical foul when Roger Mason Jr., who was not on the active list, checked into the game.

Jennings has scored 22, 24 and 22 points in three games this season.

The first half went about as badly as it could go for the Wizards — starting with the technical.

Mason had checked in for Jordan Crawford with 3:27 mark left in the first quarter and he scored on a baseline jumper seven seconds later. However, during a timeout at the 2:53 mark, the Wizards were whistled for the technical. The basket was later taken away from Mason and credited to Rashard Lewis.

Jennings made the technical free throw to make it 25-18 Milwaukee, and Ronny Turiaf’s dunk made it 25-20 before the Bucks poured it on.

Milwaukee outscored the Wizards 40-21 the rest of the half to take a 65-41 lead. The Bucks, 22nd in the league in field goal percentage coming in, shot 61.5 percent in the half to Washington’s 34 percent. Young and Wall combined to go 1 for 11 in the first half.

Washington opened the second half on a 15-4 run, holding Milwaukee without a field goal for more than five minutes. The Wizards outscored the Bucks 26-13 in the period and trailed 78-67 after three quarters.

Crawford had 12 points in the third.

Washington cut it to nine on a dunk by JaVale McGee to open the fourth, but the Wizards got no closer the rest of the way. They cut it to 88-77 with less than six minutes remaining, but the Bucks — who had blown double-digit, second-half leads in each of their first two games — used an 8-0 run to seal it.

Notes: Bucks forward Luc Mbah a Moute missed his third straight game with right knee tendinitis. Mbah a Moute took part in the shootaround. “No idea,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said, when asked how long he will be out. “We thought he was going tonight.” . Bucks forward Tobias Harris, the team’s first-round pick in 2011, also has yet to play for Milwaukee with dehydration issues. . The Bucks assigned rookie guard Darington Hobson to the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Mad Ants of the NBA Development League. Hobson was the 37th overall pick in the 2010 draft out of New Mexico but missed the 2010-11 season after undergoing hip surgery.

Jennings scores 22, Bucks keep Wizards winless…

“Right now we should really be 3-0,” Jennings said. “We were up at halftime against Charlotte, and we lost a lead. And tonight we were up (24) at half and let a team come back. That is something we really need to focus on, especially going on a West Coast road trip. On the road in hostile environments you have got to be able to contain the lead and take over.”

Jordan Crawford, benched in favor of Nick Young after scoring one point in a loss at Atlanta on Wednesday, led Washington (0-3) with 24 points. John Wall had six points on 1-of-9 shooting and four turnovers.

Ersan Ilyasova had 16 points, and Carlos Delfino, who missed the first two games of the season with a sprained right wrist, added 15 off the bench for Milwaukee (2-1). Andrew Bogut had 13 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks.

Jennings has scored 22, 24 and 22 points in three games this season.

“He has been very efficient,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. “He is doing a good job in the first half of the games of moving the ball around and seeing people and kind of taking his scoring opportunities as they come. And then as the game has gone on he’s gotten a little more aggressive, especially when we’ve struggled a little bit in those stretches.

“That’s what the good players do.”

The first half went about as badly as it could go for the Wizards – starting with a technical foul called when Roger Mason Jr., who was not on the active list, checked into the game.

Mason had come in for Crawford with 3:27 left in the first quarter and scored on a baseline jumper seven seconds later.

Wizards coach Flip Saunders took responsibility for Mason being disqualified from the game. The Wizards public relations staff also took the blame.

The NBA provides a roster to teams to circle who will be inactive for each game. The list excluded Mason’s name, and neither Saunders nor the PR staff caught the mistake before sending the final active roster to the league office.

The Bucks statistical staff noticed the mistake when they tried to enter Mason’s basket.

“It’s my fault,” Saunders said. “I didn’t notice it. I take responsibility for that. I thought he would have given us some help.”

Said Mason: “It was just human error. Just a mistake. It happens.”

Leuer helps Bucks hold off Timberwolves

MILWAUKEE (AP) — It’s far too early to bestow star status on
Milwaukee Bucks rookie Jon Leuer.

He’s not off to a bad start, though.

The second-round pick out of Wisconsin converted a three-point
play with 1:17 left, helping the Bucks hold off the Minnesota
Timberwolves for a 98-95 victory in their home opener Tuesday
night.

Leuer was cheered loudly in pregame introductions, and it only
got better from there.

“That’s the Badger love, I guess, a little bit,” Leuer said.
“They were great fans for me my four years at Wisconsin, so I’m
glad I get to keep playing for them.”

Leuer finished the game with 14 points on 5 for 7 shooting and
had eight rebounds. Bucks center Andrew Bogut joked that he might
start losing some minutes.

“Jon was great,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. “I probably
should have played him more last night. He’s earned his minutes out
there.”

Brandon Jennings scored 24 points and Stephen Jackson added 16
for the Bucks, who were playing without forward Drew Gooden because
of a suspension and several other key players because of
injuries.

Kevin Love had 31 points and 20 rebounds, repeatedly finding his
way to the free throw line for the Timberwolves.

“We just dug ourselves a hole we shouldn’t have been in,” Love
said. “We turned the ball over too much and they made some
shots.”

Minnesota was without coach Rick Adelman, who was attending
funeral services for his mother-in-law. Assistant Terry Porter, a
former head coach in Milwaukee, filled in.

The Timberwolves were sloppy on offense at times, with 25
turnovers.

“We tried to do some things, go for the home-run passes a couple
of times,” Porter said. “We just didn’t do a good enough job
offensively executing our set.”

Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio had six points, four assists,
three turnovers and three steals in 27-plus minutes.

“We were 20 down, so we started playing harder and trying to
control the game,” Rubio said. “And we did, but it was too
late.”

Milwaukee led by 10 after a pair of free throws by Jennings, but
Luke Ridnour hit a long jumper and Michael Beasley hit a 3-pointer
to cut the Bucks’ lead to 94-89 with just under three minutes
left.

Andrew Bogut fouled out with 2:08 left, sending Love to the
line. He hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to four.

After a miss by Jennings, Beasley hit a jumper to cut the lead
to two with 1:42 left.

On a chaotic possession for the Bucks, Leuer took a pass from
Jennings and went up strong to the basket.

The ball went in as Leuer was fouled, and the second-round pick
out of Wisconsin hit the free throw to complete the three-point
play and put the Bucks up 97-92 with 1:17 left.

“It’s good to have not only a rookie, but a center who can back
me up and we don’t lose too much,” Bogut said. “He shoots the ball
very well, he’s very efficient offensively. Defensively, he’s
always in the right spots.”

Free throws helped the Timberwolves cut the lead to 98-95, and
they had the ball with 7.2 seconds left. But Love missed a 3-point
attempt.

Milwaukee had a 20-point lead with just under seven minutes left
in the third quarter but went cold from there, and it began to look
as if they might blow the lead — just like they did in Monday
night’s season opener at Charlotte.

“We know we need to play better than that,” Skiles said.

The undermanned Bucks won despite a huge night from Love.

The Timberwolves’ big man made a living at the free throw line
against a depleted Bucks defense in the first quarter, drawing
whistle after whistle and forcing Skiles to keep rotating through
frontcourt players getting in foul trouble.

Love shot 15 free throws in the first quarter alone, hitting 13
— and drawing the ire of Skiles, who was called for a technical
foul with 1:22 left in the quarter after yet another call went
Love’s way.

“He’s a monster, definitely,” Leuer said. “But we contained him
enough the second half.”

Bogut said he was surprised to see Love draw so many calls.

“Yeah, definitely,” Bogut said. “Without getting a fine here, it
was tough. It was one of those games where nothing went our
way.”

The Bucks came into Tuesday’s game short-handed in the
frontcourt and expecting a handful from the Timberwolves.

Gooden was suspended for Tuesday night’s game after committing a
flagrant foul in the Bucks’ season-opening loss at Charlotte on
Monday night.

Beyond that, Bucks defensive stopper Luc Richard Mbah a Moute
remained sidelined by tendinitis in his right knee, while Carlos
Delfino (sprained right wrist) and first-round rookie Tobias Harris
(dehyrdation) also sat out Tuesday.

NOTES: Bogut had 15 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.
… The Bucks were 2 for 16 from 3-point range. … Minnesota
outrebounded Milwaukee 54-45.
